At the centre of a green landscape with two ponds sits a large figure of the master, wearing red and orange monastic robes and a yellow Gelug hat, his right hand raised in vitarka mudra and holding a long rosary, with one foot visible beneath the robes. To his right, in the lower corner, a seated portrait of the 8th Dalai Lama, Jamphel Gyatso (1758–1804), before a table with offerings; above are the 4th Panchen Lama, Lobsang Ch?kyi Gyaltsen (1570–1662), holding a vajra and a ghanta, and the 1st Dalai Lama, Gedun Drupa (1391–1474), bareheaded, holding an alms bowl. Silk brocade mounting. The thangka was probably originally part of a set of paintings of unknown number. A further thangka from this set is in the collection of the Rubin Museum of Art, New York, and is published on Himalayan Art Resources (item no. 65826), depicting another important Gelug master, Dragpa Gyaltsen (1147–1216). The paintings appear to represent lamas of the Gelug tradition and lineage, which suggests that the central image of this thangka set may have been Tsongkhapa.
