Jaap Gidding (Dutch 1887-1955) (attributed) 'Trijp' Tuschinski style rug or carpet
1920s Hand woven wool Unsigned 140 x 81cm Preview: Barley Mow Centre Provenance: Property of a private collector of Dutch Decorative Arts Notes: The Amsterdam School museum Het Schip provides the following description of this kind of textile: Trijp rugs were widely used in Amsterdam School interiors. They served as tablecloths, divan rugs, coat rack covers, and mantelpiece runners, among other things. They were unsuitable for walking on and therefore never laid on the floor. The expressive and colorful patterns (created by printing the fabric in various hues) of the Amsterdam School appealed not only to interior designers but also to a wider audience. The silky sheen of the trijp rugs, their suppleness, and rich color palette certainly contributed to their popularity. This durable fabric was also widely used for the furnishings of passenger ships, theaters (Tuschinski!), and railway carriages. Trijp is a pile fabric?like plush and velvet?with upright hairs made of mohair (from the Angora goat). The base on which the pile is attached is usually cotton. Although the history of weaving these fabrics goes back a long way, trijp rugs were initially primarily produced in the late 19th century by the Eindhoven factory Schellens & Marto. In 1887, this weaving mill revived the almost lost craft of tripe weaving. Other mills, such as the Hengelosche Trijpweverij and L?o Schellens, also in Eindhoven, followed suit. The fabric's somewhat old-fashioned image was refreshed with modern designs in the Art Nouveau and Amsterdam School styles, designed by Dutch decorative artists such as Theo Nieuwenhuis, Chris Lebeau, Carel (CA) Lion Cachet, and Jaap Gidding. Other well-known designers included Sikko van der Woude and Anton Hamaker. |
